A genealogical account of the Minter family and their settlement in East Texas
IT ALL STARTED HERE...
John Morgan Minter moved from Georgia to Hopkins County, Texas in 1853. Back in Georgia, John was a State Representative and State Senator. He was a well to do farmer who helped found Pine Forest, Texas in 1855, later owning most of the lots in town. The earliest known grave in the cemetery is that of John Morgan Minter.
In 1855, the rest of John's family migrated to Hopkins County. The oldest son, Joseph "Pappy" Thomas Minter, moved with his wife, Sarah Ann (Carter) Minter, and children.
Below are the various family branches of the Pine Forest Minters. The Association's goal is to continue the account of the Minter ancestry and share with the family's enthusiasts, news including births, deaths, marriages, and so forth. We encourage you to check the website often for updated information.

Joseph "Pappy" Thomas Minter was born on November 28, 1818 in Georgia to John Morgan Minter & Dorothy Brooks Mathis Minter. Joseph and Sarah married on December 16, 1835 in Putnam County, Georgia and had 10 children together.
Joseph, along with his wife and the first eight children to be born, migrated to Texas in 1855. Joseph and his father John bought a half interest in the townsite and helped lay off the streets and divide the town into lots in 1855. Joseph built and operated one of the first grain mills and cotton gins on his farm, both of which served the community for many years.
In 1875, Joseph and Sarah donated an additional 1.5 acres of land to expand the Methodist Church cemetery. Joseph passed away on October 11, 1888 and was buried on the land he donated to the Methodist Church for the cemetery.
...below are Joseph and Sarah's children...
Although we have formed an association called The Minters of Pine Forest Family Association and have referred to ourselves on this website, and elsewhere, as The Minters of Pine Forest, our research is inclusive of the descendants of John Morgan Minter.
As descendants of John Morgan Minter, the Pine Forest Minters have other family that are seldom-mentioned and of whom very little is known. Oliver Hunter Minter (b. circa 1828), a son of John Morgan Minter, came to Pine Forest in 1855 with the family, then shortly thereafter moved on with his family to the vicinity of Shreveport, Louisiana. Another son of John Morgan Minter, John Robert Minter, Sr., did not migrate to Texas with the rest of the family in 1855, but instead remained in Georgia with his family in the vicinity of Buena Vista.
As time unfolds, we would like to fill in the lineage of the Minter descendants. The below are children of John Morgan Minter. Should you have additional information or leads, please feel free to share with us through our Contact page.
